Bees in Switzerland face four primary challenges. Due to the ever-decreasing availability of flowering areas, both food sources and nesting opportunities are being lost. The use of pesticides in agriculture and urban development with the associated light pollution complete the "quartet of threats." Food Honey and wild bees need nectar as a source of carbohydrates and pollen as a source of protein. They obtain both largely from flowers. The problem today is that sufficient food is only available in the Central Plateau during the months of April and May. However, bees need a wide range of wild flowering plants from March through October to survive. Honey and wild bees therefore have a problem here – one that differs slightly in its severity.
